William W Quick, MD

Bill has been the volunteer webmaster for the Charleston Sail and Power Squadron since August, 2013.

He and his wife Stephanie moved to Charleston from New Jersey several years ago, where they had been members of the Raritan Bay Power Squadron. Their sailboat, Mistral, came with them from New Jersey and now is berthed at the Charleston Harbor Marina at Patriots Point.

Bill has retired from the active practice of medicine. He is board-certified in both internal medicine and in endocrinology and metabolism, and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American College of Endocrinology. Dr. Quick has 30+ years of clinical experience including over ten years in pharmaceutical medicine. Prior to joining the pharmaceutical industry, he served in the USPHS in Alaska, was Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of South Dakota, and was in private practice in endocrinology, with an emphasis on diabetes care. He has been active in the ADA for more than 30 years, and is a Past President of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. He has been a member of DIA, AACE, the Endocrine Society, and the American College of Physicians.

Job Description

The following is a draft written in November 2013 of the job description for the webmaster at CharlestonSailandPowerSquadron.org. The website is presently hosted on the USPS.org (United States Power Squadrons) server.


TITLE

Webmaster
Charleston Sail and Power Squadron

SUMMARY

Responsible for designing and maintaining Charleston Sail and Power Squadron (CSPS) website. The Webmaster is expected to perform technical and creative functions in the management of a user-friendly, visually appealing and informative Internet Web site, which conveys a positive image of the Squadron. Ensures website is functioning properly and available to users. Coordinates with Officers and Committees of CSPS to ensure current and appropriate on-line exposure of CSPS materials.

The webmaster of the CSPS reports to __________________________.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES IF WEBSITE IS ON USPS.ORG SERVERS

Design website.
• Utilize scripting languages such as Javascript as needed.
• Lay out content on web pages.
• Create and modify appearance and setting of website.
• Meet with Executive Committee to agree on proposed major changes in website's design.

Maintain website.
• Generate and revise web pages.
• Remove and archive old content, or revise to indicate on-line that material is outdated.
• Examine and analyze site traffic.
• Regulate and manage access rights of different users on website.
• Test websites to see if there are any parts that are difficult to use.
• Check hyperlinks regularly to insure validity.
• Fix links that don't work and pictures that aren't appearing properly.
• Keep files small so website loads faster.
• Tests different browsers to ensure people with different computers can access the website.
• Contracts with vendors to maintain domain name(s), search engine, and other needed services.
• Maintain websites to meet USPS standards for outstanding websites (“Distinctive Communicator” award)
• Maintains current backup of website on separate servers as well as on webmaster’s personal computer.

Interact with other CSPS and USPS staff.
• Coordinates with Membership Committee, Member Involvement Committee, Educational Committee, et al., to assure timely and appropriate on-line exposure of CSPS materials.
• Coordinates with CSPS Social Media writers to assure maximal on-line exposure of CSPS materials without unnecessary overlap.
• Provides quarterly and ad-hoc reports to Executive Committee.
• Follows guidances from USPS for USPS-affiliated websites.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES IF WEBSITE ON SERVERS OTHER THAN USPS.ORG

• All responsibilities listed above.
• Ensure the web servers, hardware and software are operating accurately.
• Configure web servers.
• Serve as the server administrator.
• Deal with and respond to heavy volumes of email.
• Decide what kind of computer will hold website's information.
• Decide how website's content will be delivered to the Internet.
